George Washington

Day 6 Recap

We had a wonderful day heading up the history timeline. Yesterday we started in 1607 and ended around 1776. Today we visited our First Presidents home of Mount Vernon. Before we headed out of Williamsburg we had breakfast at our hotel. I was not impressed. We got to breakfast around 9:30 and had about 30 minutes before the breakfast was over. They were out of a lot of food and weren't going to refill much. This was not ok. We grabbed what we could and ate fast. We left the hotel around 11:00 and headed for Mount Vernon. Parking was pretty easy to find and the walk over to the entrance gates was very short. Here are a few pictures from Mount Vernon.

This is the Potomac River. You can see it from George Washington's backyard.
Here is a 16 sided barn and the servants quarters were to the right.
Of course there is scaffolding for the house. They are having to scrape every tile on the roof to repaint it. We were not allowed to take pictures inside the house but it was BEAUTIFUL! The paint colors were very vivid. They had many guest rooms because people would come visit often. One year they had over 600 visitors to their home.
There were George Washington Statues all over the place.
Here is the Washington family... and a Smith :)

We found where President Washington is buried. His tomb is in here.

There were many gardens. George Washington had about 8,000 acres of land. Today there are only 200 acres.
This tree is from the 1700s.
The mansion from afar! It was breathtaking!
With a view like this I would have stayed in this house. It was incredibly peaceful.
Natalie and I enjoying the backyard.
 The 3 musketeers!
Celeste and I taking in the view from the back porch!

A tree that was planted by George Washington!!!

After leaving Mount Vernon we headed for Washington DC! This is the nations capital!! After finding our home for the next 3 nights we decided to explore. It was right around sunset and we were a 10 minute walk from the Capitol!! That's right folks! We are staying in Capitol Hill. We took many photos of the Capitol east entrance and then walked around to the west entrance. When we got to the west entrance the Army band and choir were there putting on a show! We were finally in the right place at the right time. Enjoy a few photos of the capitol at sunset.

That's it for now folks! Check back to see what we do while exploring the nation's capital!
