Fairy Falls

 Day 16

Today was a bucket list cross off type of day for sure! We spent the whole day in Yellowstone National Park! We woke up early so that we could explore the park before it got too hot. I also heard that there have been long lines in the National Parks as American's want to be outside this summer after being quarantined last summer. We made the right choice to get there early. We were through the gates by 8:00. The scenery was breathtaking. The weather this morning was in the 50s/60s but quickly rose to the 90s. It was also very windy and dirt was everywhere!

Our first stop was the lower geyser basin. It was still cold outside so there was a lot of steam coming off the geysers and thermal pools.

We then drove to the Prismatic pools. In these hot pools, you can see different colors based on the different bacteria and minerals. The heat coming off of these is intense as is the smell.

Our third stop of the day was to hike to Fairy Falls - a beautiful waterfall. This hike was listed as easy. It was 2.5 miles to the falls and then you had to hike back. Let me tell you... this was hard for me. All I can say is that it was hard but worth it! I'm exhausted but to say that I hiked over 5 miles in Yellowstone is something I can carry with me the rest of my life.

After Fairy Falls we drove to see Old Faithful erupt. We got there at the perfect time. It was around 1:20 and they predicted Old Faithful to erupt again at 2:02. While we waited in the sun, a friendly park ranger gave us facts about Yellowstone and told everyone to hydrate. She taught us that Yellowstone is on top of a Volcano. The geyser is like a tea kettle where it will start to bubble before erupting. I was not expecting much, but when Old Faithful erupted it exceeded my expectations!

After Old Faithful we were beat. We headed back to West Yellowstone to go to the Grizzly Bear and Wolf Discovery Center, pick up some souvenirs, and grabbed an early dinner. We ate at a restaurant across the street from our hotel called Gusher. They have burgers, chicken, pizza, sandwiches and salads. We got back early to the hotel to shower and repack as we leave tomorrow for the next place.
