I Fell Into the Pit

 Day 15

What a beautiful day we had today! The weather was perfect for our drive from Kalispell down to West Yellowstone. We started our drive around 9:00 this morning and took the scenic route around Flathead Lake.

We made it to Butte, Montana to see the Berkeley Pit. We lucked out and there was a tour going on so we learned some information for free. This pit formed in the old mine and gradually has been filling with water. There is a cannon sound that goes off every 10 minutes to scare the birds away from the toxic water. To get there you just pay your entrance fee and then go through the tunnel to the viewing area. They have information about the old mine that you can read.

After leaving Butte, we headed to our destination for tonight - West Yellowstone. We checked into our hotel which is a historic hotel. We then headed out to do the free historical walking tour. Along the way we saw the painted buffalo, historical sights, and stopped in the Yellowstone Museum. We had burgers for dinner at the Outpost. It was a fun day!
